AHAIC 2023: A COMING TOGETHER OF NATIONS!

"Healthcare investment is crucial for our economy, communities, and national security, not a mere financial burden on the social sector,” Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa."

At least 1000 participants from across the world gathered on the second day of AHAIC 2023 to discuss health challenges impacting the continent. Participants shared solutions, best practices, recommendations and next steps to bolster health systems in Africa.

Day two of AHAIC 2023 featured two plenary sessions and thirteen parallel sessions covering a range of topics including climate change and health, sustainable manufacturing, global health security, cervical cancer elimination, and building resilient health systems.

Key takeaways from today:

  • Africa has the capacity to develop its own solutions to the health and climate challenges impacting the continent.

  • We need to take a ‘One Health’ approach to address shared health threats more holistically. African countries must unite and share knowledge and other resources to address today's and tomorrow's health challenges.

  • Placing communities at the centre of health and climate interventions is key to building health system resilience.

  • African countries must go beyond capacity building to capacity retention in order to prevent brain drain.

  • We need to ensure equity in health approaches and stop politicizing women's health if we are to create gender responsive health systems.

  • Deeper collaboration is critical to Africa's success. Countries must partner with stakeholders across all levels, including civil society, communities and financial and technical institutions.
